Brawndo has what plants crave! It’s got electrolytes! ‘…Okay – what are electrolytes? Do you know? Yeah. It’s what they use to make Brawndo. – Idiocracy

If you have ever participated in sports or watched any sports drink commercial you have heard of electrolytes.  But what are they and why are they important for performance?

Electrolytes are certain minerals that, when dissolved in water, create electrically charged particles called ions.  These ions work with each other to transmit nerve impulses throughout the body.  When electrolytes are in balance, along with sufficient water, the body works efficiently – transmitting nerve impulses and stimulating muscle contractions to perform at your best.  But, when they are out of balance, or severely depleted, all neurological and muscular functions suffer.  This includes muscle cramping, irregular heartbeat and even foggy thinking.  This is why it is critical to maintain hydration and electrolyte balance whether you are mowing the lawn on a hot summer day or training for an endurance event.

What are the electrolytes the body needs?  There are six mineral electrolytes – sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, chlorine and phosphate.  Anytime you have an intense sweat session, are out in the sun for an extended time, or even drink a lot of water you will need to rebalance your electrolytes.  Before you run to the store for a commercial drink filled with artificial colors, preservatives and sugar there are simple and cheaper ways to make a healthy electrolyte drink.  Below are some ingredients you may already have in your kitchen:

Apple Cider Vinegar – Along with many B vitamins and vitamin C, apple cider vinegar contains sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium and phosphorus.  Phosphorus combines with oxygen in the body to form phosphate, one of the key electrolytes.

Maple Syrup – Similar to apple cider vinegar, this sweet tree sap also contains sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium and phosphorus.

Ginger – Although more famously known as a digestive aid, ginger is also a good source of potassium and magnesium.

Molasses – The thick, dark black strap molasses variety is rich in calcium, magnesium and potassium.

Traditional farmers have been using these very ingredients for centuries as the first electrolyte drink called Switchel.  Looking for the recipe?  Check out this Ginger Switchel recipe!
